My journey began in June 2023 when I met Haysema, the village leader, who shared the heartbreaking story of a dust storm that destroyed their tent school. I promised to return with school supplies for the children. Four months later, I fulfilled that promise, initially aiming to raise $1,800 but, thanks to the generosity of many, I raised $50,000. With these funds, I applied for nonprofit status and was overjoyed to receive IRS approval.
During my last three visits to Ethiopia, I brought over 25 large suitcases filled with supplies. My first stop was Logia School, where I provided books, pens, pencils, solar calculators, art supplies, shoes, and clothing donated by friends and supporters. I then traveled to the Omo Valley to visit the Regea Elementary School in Kibish village, sharing the same essential supplies. My final stop was Guh Freselam School, which had been devastated by a three-year war, where I dedicated significant efforts to help with their rebuilding.
After my initial trip, I organized a board of directors and intensified our efforts at Guh Freselam School. We have rebuilt walls for safety, cemented classroom floors, and provided desks for 126 students. Six months later, I returned with nine large suitcases filled with additional supplies, including backpacks, pens, maps, rulers, and crayons. I was also able to enhance the students' learning experience with the donation of five computers from generous supporters.
We celebrated these achievements with a traditional feast, sharing Ethiopian food and two goats. The joy and gratitude expressed by the students, teachers, and parents were overwhelming, and I am sincerely thankful for your support.
Warm regards,
Michael Herbert
