Sustainable Chicken Farming

Our Newest Initiative!

We are now embarking on a new project to create a sustainable chicken farm. The village members have agreed to build a chicken coop, and African Hopeful Horizons will provide egg-laying hens. This initiative aims to help the community sustain itself and generate profit to provide lunches for the students. A nourishing meal will not only promote learning but also encourage children to attend school.

Education is the key to survival, prosperity, and growth for these children. Through no fault of their own, they have been born into challenging circumstances, and your generosity has been a lifeline. We have expanded our program beyond school supplies to include a crucial lunch program. During my trip in June 2024, I recognized that while school supplies are vital, nutrition is equally important for learning. Without proper meals, students’ abilities to learn diminish.

To ensure the sustainability of our lunch program, I proposed a chicken farming initiative that will provide eggs for lunches and generate revenue for its maintenance. I committed to purchasing the chickens if the village built the coop, which construction began in September. Once completed, we supplied roofing, windows, doors, and 60 chickens, along with three additional chickens donated by the seller.

On November 25th, just days before Thanksgiving, we served the first lunches to 127 students. The joy evident in the photos of the chickens, coop, and students enjoying their meals filled my heart with pride. This is just the beginning! We acquired 200 more chickens and will be building a dedicated lunchroom for the students, and as we grow, we will be raising goats and starting beekeeping.

We hope to complete this project by early 2025 and expand to a neighboring village. Together, we are making a difference, and I am immensely grateful for your ongoing support.
